Grow in Discipleship
Sunday worship is vital in the life of every believer; however, discipleship is meant to continue throughout the week. At Houston’s First, Equip classes support ongoing discipleship by providing structured learning environments where participants can explore biblical teaching more deeply than a sermon format allows. These classes also offer practical tools and spiritual habits that participants practice between sessions, along with ongoing encouragement and accountability from their leaders and peers. In this way, Equip helps people integrate what they hear on Sunday into their everyday lives, serving as a bridge from inspiration to transformation.
Additionally, as believers grow in discipleship, their growth should lead to action. The Christian life involves more than simply attending Sunday services; believers should continually ask, “What’s next?” and seek ways to use their gifts to serve the Lord. Equip classes help guide participants in this process by clarifying spiritual milestones and helping individuals identify their gifts, calling, and areas for growth. Through opportunities such as serving, mentoring, and deeper study, participants are encouraged to take next steps in their faith. As a result, Equip provides the guidance and confidence believers need to move forward in their spiritual journey.
One might wonder how spiritual disciplines can be developed, especially for those who find it difficult to put these practices into action. At Equip, these disciplines are intentionally built into the learning experience. Participants are taught both the “why” and the “how” behind practices, such as prayer and Scripture reading. Through simple and realistic weekly practices, along with opportunities for reflection and discussion, participants begin to apply what they are learning. Over time, these rhythms become sustainable in the life of a believer, allowing spiritual disciplines to move to consistent habits.
Discipleship, as described by Adult Education Minister Tim Young, is the process of becoming a Great Commission Disciple Maker; someone who reflects Christ in every stage of life and intentionally walks alongside others as they grow in their faith. This journey requires the development of biblical habits, including faithful church attendance, connection to biblical community, and daily rhythms of personal discipleship. It also involves deeper engagement through discipleship environments such as Equip classes. As believers grow, they are encouraged to become PATHMAKERS and live out the model of 2 Timothy 2:2 by investing in and discipling others. Ultimately, discipleship is lived out daily through humility and service, following the instruction of Philippians 2:3, and seeking opportunities to share the Gospel and invest in the lives of fellow believers.
2 Timothy 2:2 (CSB)
"What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."
Philippians 2:3 (CSB)
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves."
